    COVID-19 Guidelines Updated 1.10.22 Click the PDF icon to download current quarantine and isolation guidelines. Updated 1.10.22 Windham Academy 2021-2022 Reopening Plan (Published August 2021) As Windham Academy opens for the 2021-2022 school year, masks will be OPTIONAL for staff and students. Staff and students may continue to wear a mask if they choose to do so. If our state and federal officials (NH DHHS, NH DOE, and the CDC) mandate that this safety feature is necessary, the WA School Board will update you with any/all changes. ~ Remote learning will not be offered "in place of" in-person learning at WA at this time. ~Parents are asked to assess their children before leaving home and to contact WA if any COVID-like symptom has developed. Please continue to be vigilant in keeping students home who are "not feeling well". Communication with Nurse Barth will be "key" here. ~Social Emotional: Teachers will have one-on-one meetings with families before school opens to discuss the current mindset of the child. WA will continue to provide the social and emotional services to staff/students who may need support. These services may include but are not limited to: meeting students in-person, Classroom lessons, individual and group counseling, and supporting our students' social and emotional needs. ~We have a large, new building. There is ample room for separation during academic time. Staff and students will no longer be required to social distance. However, students will be invited to have a mask with them during the school day. If an activity calls for students to be in close proximity, "mask time" will be offered, but not required. ~We will continue to focus on hand washing and sanitizing throughout the day. ~ WA has a modern HVAC system. Filters will be changed quarterly. ~ WA water fountains will not be in use. Students/Staff are invited to bring water bottles from home. ~ Windham Bus Students must follow guidelines put forth by (STA and Durham Transportation Services) COVID-19 guidelines. ~ Mr. Greg and the evening custodians will continue to use Eco-Sprays and Cleansers throughout the building. Staff and students will be wiping down surfaces and classroom items daily.

Please allow 24 hours for email responses when school is in session. There is no expectation that staff will respond to emails on holidays or weekends.     Join the PTO VOLUNTEER How does my family become a member? For the 2018-2019 academic year, membership is open to all WA families, teachers, and staff free of cost; however we ask our members to participate in our monthly meetings, volunteer at events, etc. Will there be future membership fees? Yes, the PTO will ask each family to donate a nominal fee; which will go towards operating the PTO throughout the year. Your membership will also include benefits throughout the year (ex. discount toward WA PTO events) Do I renew my membership each year? Yes, at the beginning of the school year, your child(ren) will bring home information to register for the current school year. Join the PTO The WA PTO is seeking members to help with a few projects. These are great positions for those who are unable to make meetings or would like to take on additional roles within the organization.     Scientist Visit: Michelle Skoorka, Ph.D April 22, 2022 Buy The Book **Book orders due by April 1! Michelle Skoorka, Ph.D. Head, Platform Concept Formulation Branch, Code 4522 USW Platforms & Payload Integration Department Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport Dr. Skoorka grew up in New York City. As a kid, she loved to watch TV after school – especially Star Trek. Once she discovered that “Star Ship Captain” may not be a realistic career goal, Michelle decided to look into other space and science related careers. She attended the renowned Bronx High School of Science. After high school, Michelle followed a somewhat unconventional path, working at Tower Records before attending several universities on her journey to discover her true calling. Today, Dr. Skoorka is the Head of the Platform Concept Formulation Branch, USW Platforms & Payload Integration Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center – basically, she gets to work designing submarines! Prior to this role, she held several other positions with the Navy, including working with drones and overseeing STEM internships at the Office of Naval Research. Michelle currently lives in Rhode Island with her rescued Newfoundland dog Daisy. In her spare time, she loves to exercise, travel, hang out with Daisy, and NEVER misses a chance to get an ice cream. Recently, Dr. Skoorka has been featured in a children’s book, Who Is A Scientist by Laura Gehl. The book features a diverse group of people who work in many different fields of science. Daisy Windham Academy is excited to welcome Dr. Skoorka on April 22. She will be reading the book and holding a Q&A session with grades K-3. Grades 4-6 will be spending some additional time learning about Dr. Skoorka’s unconventional path to find her career and discussing how ANYONE can be a scientist. Stay tuned for details and other fun activities planned around the visit. The book will be available for sale in our online store. Books will be delivered during Dr. Skoorka's visit and can be autographed. Each book will also have a personalized bookplate signed by the author, Laura Gehl. 20% of the proceeds from the book sale will be used to fund STEM materials for our school. Heggerty- Phonemic Awareness (Grades K–1) Daily phonemic awareness instruction supports early reading and spelling development. Short, engaging lessons help students hear, manipulate, and connect sounds to letters, building essential decoding skills. Social Studies (K-8) McGraw Hill IMPACT Social studies emphasizes inquiry, civic understanding, and multiple perspectives. Using McGraw Hill IMPACT, students explore history, geography, economics, and civics while developing leadership skills and respect for democratic values. English Language Arts (3-5 & 6-8) Magnetic Reading (Grades 3–5) Students strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression through knowledge-rich literary and informational texts. Science (K-8) Core Knowledge Science instruction follows the Core Knowledge Science framework and aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
